Around the Area with Miss Julia

We started out October being very much aware that it was Rosh Hoshanna, the Jewish New Year!  We feel like it starts the blessing time.  So with that in mind, we headed to Willow Spring Methodist Church on Cates Bay Road in Conway, S.C.  We were blessed with a covered dish dinner that was wonderful.  Thomas Mills was there to greet us at this beautiful old Church.  Well, Byron Mew sang some beautiful songs and blessed us all and then shared his time with some of the older members that sang and picked so good!! Thanks Byron for sharing!! I saw some old friends -- Hi Jackie.  They have these every month on 1st Tuesday of the month!!

We headed out to Mullins, S. C. on Saturday night on the 11th.  We took an old friend of ours, Anna Powell, and I took time out to go see my Grandparents’ old home place near Woodlawn Park Baptist Church in the Scotch Community.  I started school in Scotch school.  There is still a little bit of the school left.  I went down memory lane!!  We got there as Sharon Graham was singing, and she is really good.  Then Webb Quartet came on, and I was amazed at the songs that Eunice and Wayne Hewitt had written.  They are so good!  I was impressed with their good singing, even if I used to baby sit Bobby Jayroe.  Lillian Jayroe and I are not Old!!

Then the night kicked into overdrive with the Rivertown Boys singing a lot of what they write for themselves.  You know Kenny has that highhhhh voice, and the rest try to kick in!!  Billy Joe, Kevin, and Donnie caught up and they blessed us with great music.  Then the Oxendines came in with a surprise.  Jacob wasn’t there but Eddie, you did a great job with Chris and Keith.  You know they write a lot of their music and Keith Oxendines will preach -- and preach he did.  Good Job man!!. We had to leave early to get our friend home.  We got to hear the Browders; you all have a great sound and we had to make ourselves leave. The church was packed and I got to see some old friends.  It was so good to see so many come out to support the Webb Quartet kids!!  Great Night!!  An anointed night with the Lord.  Great!! Great!!

We headed to Galivants Ferry and not to a stump meeting either, but to a Homecoming Singing.  October 17th at 7:00PM we got to Mt. Trolly Free Will Baptist Church and it was jam up filled to the brim!!  We were 30 minutes early and we had brought Judy and Anna Powell with us, and we just did find a seat!!  Marty Cox, the pastor, was smiling and so happy with the crowd.  They even started a little early with a lot of good singing.  Man, the team from Mt. Trolly can sing.  The Bowlings had a time finding the Church.  It is not on the beaten path, it is in a very harrrrddd to find place in the dark especially!!  No offense Marty!!  The Bowlings came to the pulpit area and begin to sing, and let me say Mike and Kelly can sing!!  We have heard them over the years and I know they are better than ever and their girls are great also.  My, My, My, what talent they have, move over Mom and Dad, the kids are on the way!!  They have a wonderful anointed and the people poured out and came to the altar to get everything right with the Lord!  At break time, the Mt. Trolly Praise Team began to sing, and Danny Barnhill, son Sam and Jessica McCracken did a bang up job on” It Feels like Redemption.”  Man, they did some singing!!    Thank you all for a grand night!!

I was out on 501 and went to Country Cottage in the University Shopping Center and visited this Shoppe.  Neat stuff and Christian, hard to find signs, etc.  One of our new advertisers. Went to the Blue Wave Bead Shoppe in Conway.  They have the neatest jewelry beads, and will show you  how to make all kinds of neat jewelry -- and you can talk about Jesus!

Keep praying, humble ourselves and pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked way:  then the Lord will hear our cry and forgive our sins and heal our land.  I truly felt the anointing as we traveled around this month!  I know God is fixing to do something awesome in our land!!  Praise the Lord!!

We thank all our advertisers, singers, Churches for your faithfulness and support!  Lord, pour out a blessing on them all that they can hardly contain!!  Thank you Lord.  Bring Annette’s sister Dawn home, heal Debbie of Breast Cancer, touch Karen’s back problem, touch Dave’s body with total healing, touch Dr. Todd Morris (pastor) and heal him of colon cancer – and every prayer need that the Beth Moore Bible class has -- touch with your will Father.  Touch Pastor Freddie’s Eye with total healing!! Those are just a few Lord.  Weston needs to continue to be healed. Mary Nelson to have not pain in her legs and back.

Thank you, Debbie, Tim, Becky, Lois, Barbara, Donna, Corbin, Prayer Team, and supporters with phone calls.  You all are the greatest!!  God is wonderful when he puts special people in your path and you meet the great people day by day!!  Thank you, Lord, for bringing all these wonderful people in my life.      A special thanks to the Lady at Mt. Trolly who had all the names for me.  God always has his people there to help; we only need to ask!!  Thank you, Father, for surrounding us with your precious family.

In His Service, Miss Julia and Mr. Dave

The Crayon

by Donna Dozier

Many of us were grieved to hear of the death of Randy Pausch, the author and deliverer of The Last Lecture.  Seeing the Last Lecture of this professor at Carnegie Mellon University only makes you want to see it again, and to buy the book, and to listen carefully to his profound advice as the last lecture of a dying man.  If you missed it on TV and on Diane Sawyer’s ABC TV special, you can still see it again at www.thelastlecture.com.

One of the statements from that lecture wanders about in the back of my mind, and emerges when I least expect it:

You should keep a crayon in your pocket so the smell can remind you of when you were young and thought you could fly.

Do you remember that fresh scent of new crayons?  They were always close by at that time in your life when there were no limits on your imagination, your accomplishments, or your future?  Maybe you wanted to fly -- or maybe you wanted to preach -- or sail to the ends of the earth.

Take Randy’s advice.  When you slip your hand into your pocket, do you locate that crayon, roll it over in your hand, smile and drift back in time? What impossible dream do you find there lying dormant?

Now think back when you were newly born again.  The idea that “all things are possible” needed no excuses for you then.  There was nothing “lukewarm” about your belief.  No great theologian had yet “explained away” the promises you found in scripture.  You met each day with fresh excitement and expectation of miracles.  You were a “revolutionary soldier” for a radical God.  You never considered whether it would be “politically correct” to witness in a public place or give your testimony to someone of an opposing belief.  You probably found it difficult to say more than a few sentences without the name of your “first love, Jesus” in them?  And there was probably an explosive laugh lying just beneath the surface of your voice and behind the twinkle in your eye.

Now take it just a little farther -- when you were newly baptized in the Holy Spirit.  Do you remember the delight of being able to speak a few words in tongues at any time you wished?  And if you needed any kind of miracle, all you needed to do was utter a few words in tongues to remind you of how easily miracles work through you.  It was so easy to see that the miracles didn’t need a method or even your intellectual consent.  They didn’t pass through your intellect at all.  They went straight from the Holy Spirit, through your spirit to the person needing the miracle.  How many times did you hear a beautiful prophecy or Word from the Lord, and immediately say, “That was beautiful!” but couldn’t recall even one phrase of it?  It went straight into your spirit without passing your intellect.  But it was nestled firmly in your spirit, ready for recall when needed.  And you were so grateful that even in confusion you could pray in that new language and know for a fact that you were praying in the perfect will of your God.

Like any love relationship, we sometimes need a little help to return to that “first love.”  Whatever it takes -- a crayon, a promise box, an old photo -- whatever works -- return to that first love and nurture it.  Maybe you will find the seed of an old dream, ready to awaken, and burst into fulfillment.  Maybe you can still fly, or sail to the ends of the earth, or walk with Him through the Holy Land and find again the delight of being with your “first love, Jesus” and doing his work alongside Him.  He has already promised the natural result of this delight:

Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

It’s never too late.  He has waited a long time for your return.  His love for you overwhelms Him.  Go!

A Nation

Established by God

Thanksgiving is a day to remember

Throughout the entire year.

A time we give thanks for peace

And freedom that’s ours to share.

A day of extended appreciation

To the pilgrims who founded this land,

For they were human like we

And their needs were all the same,

But instead of quitting or giving up,

They called on God their maker

And He provided them with food

And also gave them shelter.

They were so lonely, they were tired,

They were a people wanting a nation

That could be controlled by God

And not by mechanization.

And in this complex society

That surrounds our wants and wishes,

We pass each Thanksgiving Day by

With good things piled high on dishes.

And at the widespread dinner table,

Our pilgrim heritage is missing,

For seldom do people anymore

Thank God for all His blessings,

But the one who stops and says a prayer

And thanks God for His tender care

Is still a pilgrim in this land,

Guided by an unseen hand.

Religious Viewpoint

“HAPPINESS IN TOUGH TIMES”

In a recent poll conducted by a news organization they found most Americans felt happy most of the time. If true, some might ask why are so many going to therapists, counseling, divorce lawyers and taking Prozac. Why do so many have a sense of emptiness? When the economy is weak and some politicians talk only of gloom and doom, can the poll be trusted? One thing we all agree on is that people want to be happy.

I visited Russia before the Iron Curtain came down and have made several visits to Russia since. What struck me were not the shabby apartments, poverty of the people, but the lack of happiness. There were few smiling faces and people appeared to be void of joy. The Gospel brought a breath of fresh hope and joy. It appears Putin is determined to take them back to socialism and suppress religious freedom. They had been told for 70 years there was not God. Their lack of spirituality left them empty and without joy. I saw thousands of them accept Christ as their personal Savior. Their faces would light up and they would speak of joy. After a few years of religious freedom and opportunity let us pray they will not return to their old ways.

In Time magazine there was a cover story on the science of happiness. The article pointed out that laughter and optimistic thoughts are good for your health and may help you to live longer. In the book, Head
